Modern and Applied Languages

Based in the heart of a vibrant, multilingual capital, the department of Modern and Applied Languages offers a flexible and exciting range of opportunities to study European and non-European languages, cultures and societies and develop professional translation and interpreting skills.

Our teaching programmes include:

Undergraduate language studies

Our undergraduate language degree programme allows students to combine two languages, start a new language, specialise in translation or study a language with another subject. The languages available include Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Russian and Spanish.

Postgraduate applied language training

The postgraduate applied language programme offers a range of specialised MAs in translation, interpreting and conference interpreting focusing on professional applications and links to employment.

Professional and short courses

Twenty-five foreign languages are offered at six different levels as part of the Modern Languages Evening Programme in addition to many translation classes and English as a Foreign Language.

Westminster's Open Language Programme allows students enrolled at the University to study a credited language module alongside their other studies.

As well as being committed to the delivery of high-quality teaching of foreign languages and cultures to a diverse student population, our academic staff are also engaged on a number of pedagogical and intercultural research and consultancy activities.
