Your Right of Access to Personal Information

Under Section 7 of the Data Protection Act 1998 individuals have a right of access to their own personal data held by the University. A request for all such information is a Subject Access Request.

Under the Data Protection Act 1998 the individual is entitled to:

  • A description of the data
  • The Recipients of the data
  • Information about any automated decisions that have been made
  • A copy of the data on request
  • All the above within 40 days

Making a Subject Access Request

To access personal data the Data Subject must complete the Data Protection Subject Access Request Form available at the link below:

The requestor must state specifically what information is required. A charge of £10 applies to each request. The Data Subject must provide proof of identity, in the case of a student or staff member they must produce their ID card. The University must provide this information within the specified time limit of 40 days. The Subject Access Request form must be sent to the Finance Department so that payment can be processed. It will then be passed on to the University Records Manager so the request can be logged and tracked. The University Records Manager can be contacted at the address below:

CCTV Images

The Data Protection Act 1998 also covers images captured by CCTV camera installations. Data Subjects have the right to view images held on the University of Westminster's CCTV systems. However, please be aware that images are only maintained for a maximum time period of 30 days. This is in accordance with recommendations by the Information Commissioner. Access to CCTV images must be organised through the Campus Estates Manager and the University Records Manager. The University CCTV policy document is available at the link below:
