Jeanette Steemers (PhD 1990 University of Bath) is a graduate in German and Russian (European Studies) and her PhD looked at the challenges facing public service broadcasting in West Germany.
Her research interests include media policy, children’s media, media in Europe, the international circulation of formats and television programmes, and the media industries in general.
Her work on Pre-School Television was funded by a three years of Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) funding. She is author of Creating Preschool Television: A Story of Commerce, Creativity and Curriculum (2010 Palgrave) and co-editor of Media in Today (Intellect, 2011)
Her work on British television programme exports was funded by the Leverhulme Trust, the AHRC and the British Academy. She is author of Selling Television: British Television in the Global Marketplace (BFI, 2004) and co-author of European Television Industries (BFI, 2005).
She is Associate Editor (Europe) for Convergence and also a member of the Euromedia Research Group. She is a Director of the Voice of the Listener and Viewer. Before entering academia she worked as a media industry analyst at CIT Research, London, and Research Manager at HIT Entertainment PLC, a London-based producer, distributor and funder of pre-school television.
Jeanette leads the following modules: Media and Society, Media Around the Globe as well as Media Management Methods, for the MA in Media Management. She is interested in supervising doctoral research in the following areas: European media, media industries, childrens television, media exports, global media, media institutions, television formats. She supervises and has examined several doctoral theses.
