Background

I joined Westminster in 1985 after working as a manager in international shipping and aviation. At Westminster I have been a course leader, head of a department and director of the Graduate Centre for the Built Environment. Currently my main focus is on directing research and consultancy projects concerned with freight transport and logistics. I am a specialist in urban logistics, logistics and energy issues and international developments in logistics.

I am the Assistant Editor of the journal Transport Reviews, and I am on the editorial boards of: The Journal of International Logistics: Research and Applications, and Supply Chain Forum.

Teaching

I teach on courses concerned with courses in logistics and supply chain management and transport. My main teaching activities cover the themes of retail supply chain management and business issues in logistics management. I also contribute to the research methods module that forms part of the dissertation programme for MSc students. In addition I supervise MSc projects/dissertations for 10 to 12 students each year.

Research and Consultancy

As Professor of Logistics at the University my main role is to direct research and consultancy projects in the freight transport and logistics field. This is a very active research area for the Transport Studies Department and we have carried out studies for many sponsoring organisations over the past 20 years. Recent projects include: research on sustainable distribution and green logistics strategies, best practice in distribution in European cities, potential energy savings from city logistics strategies, mapping energy use in global supply chains and forecasting future trends in freight transport and distribution. I have worked on studies for the EPSRC, the European Commission, the UK Departments of Transport and Trade, and commercial organisations.  I am currently working with the Commission for Integrated Transport as an adviser to their Working Group on Light Commercial Vehicles.

During the past five years an important activity has been to establish a London Freight Data and Knowledge Centre working with the Freight Unit at Transport for London (TfL). The aim of this centre has been to support the freight transport initiatives of TfL and also to find ways to share best practice initiatives between cities.

A summary of some of the projects carried out since 2005 is shown below:

  • EPSRC Green Logistics Project: Working with five other universities to establish more sustainable logistics options and strategies).
  • OECD Globalisation study: Establishing the role of international road and rail freight transport in globalisation.
  • BESTUFS II (Best Urban Freight Solutions Project funded by the European Commission: Coordinating the work on freight data collection and for drafting best practice guidelines for European cities.
  • Urban Freight Consolidation Centres: A review carried out for the Department for Transport in 2005 to establish reasons for success and failure of Urban Consolidation Centres.

Life cycle approaches to energy use within supply chains. Research funded by the French Agency for Energy Management (ADEME): This research considers opportunities to reduce energy use in a supply chain context by investigating various stages in the supply of specific products.
