Performance and reporting
For successive years, 2009 and 2010 the University of Westminster participated in the UK-wide Universities that Count programme to assess our environmental and social responsibility performance. The 2009/10 report identified the University of Westminster as one of the most improved universities in the programme.
2010/11 was used as a consultation period; the University of Westminster hosted, and was involved in, advisory panel meetings. After extensive consultation with the higher education sector the Learning in Future Environments (LiFE) index was launched on 1 November 2011 – the fully redeveloped, rebranded and re-launched Universities that Count programme.
Universities that Count (UTC)
The UTC programme consists of four pillars:
- Workplace (our people)
- Marketplace (our business conduct and learning, teaching and research activities)
- Environment
- Community (interaction with our neighbourhood)
The survey structure

Report highlights 2009/10
Community management at the University of Westminster was recognised as an 'Impact Area of Outstanding Achievement' (with a rating greater than 90 per cent). The areas of corporate strategy, marketplace management, social impact, and assurance and disclosure were recognised as 'Impact Areas of Excellence' (greater than 75 per cent).

Completing the survey is not an end point. It identifies where we need to improve and provides a framework to benchmark our environmental, social and economic sustainability initiatives against. The UTC Steering Group – made up of representatives from schools and corporate services – manages this process.
